Weather and Snow

The Tony Grove Snotel at 8400' reports 33°F this morning, with 16" total settled snow. Last weekend's storm snow is the only layer on the ground, and it survived through the week on slopes facing all directions above about 7500'.There's just enough snow to cover the rocks, and some folks are getting out on smooth grassy slopes.

Upper elevation slopes are blanketed by 1 to 2 feet of snow, now battered by wind and sun, and weakened a bit by faceting. A temperature gradient exists through the shallow snowpack, especially at night, and the strength of existing snow is likely to continue to deteriorate. Generally stable snow conditions exist, but you might trigger loose sluffs in very steep terrain and small wind slab avalanches are possible on some drifted upper elevation slopes.
