Comments:

There have been a rash of recent avalanches on the Skyline this week.  Crowns are averaging 18" in depth.  Today we went to find out why.  A buried facet layer sits below the new storm snow and can be found on North, North-east & East facing slopes.  It's consistently inconsistent in terms of its reaction.  In some locations all the new snow fails as a slab in a sudden planer fashion.  In other locations the weak layer "smushes" down and does not produce a failure.

This is why you can ride one slope without incident, and jump on another and it slides.
