Weakest structure I have seen in the Wasatch this season. I feel that there is a difference in the snow pack right now between the Central Cottonwoods and the Provo Area mountains. In the Cottonwoods I have seen 40cm of depth hoar on N aspects, varying in hardness, at the ground. In the Provo area, I have seen only half that amount, approx. 20cm, and most of the depth hoar at the ground appeared to be moist and gaining strength. The Provo facets at the ground were not dry and weak like they were up north. I would venture that this is why we haven't seen the same types of avalanches as the Cottonwoods. Headed up to Mill Canyon Peak to see if the snowpack fell on the Cottonwoods end of the spectrum, or the Provo end. I was surprised to find 70cm of dry facets and advanced depth hoar in the areas where I dug today. CT 26 Q1 at the interface between the stout mid-pack 1F+ slab and the facets. I'm feeling that the facets have adjusted to the new load and are supporting things for now. If a quick additional load is added, expect the house of cards will come down.
