Two pits: one in Dry Fork and one below Sunset in Catherines. See pit diagrams for more info. Apologies for lack of fancy snowpit diagram. Weather: Broken with trace new snow. Got breezy and socked in around 15:00. Earlier, light westerly winds, no transport at mid-elevations. Fairly warm when sun was out, but limited heating due to clouds. Avalanche activity/instabilities: No new avalanche activity or signs of instability (ie. cracking, collapsing, whumpfing). Snow surface: No new recorded snow since 2/7/10. 1cm softish RR crust on southern exposures under inch or so of stellars. Got out the microscope and found minimal faceting of crystals immediately above RR crust. North and sheltered creamy with some recrystalized snow. No SH observed. Comments: Areas with preserved deeper packs > 2m depth are healing and bridged. Still very cautious in rocky and irregular terrain, afraid of hitting thin trigger points. On the Alta periphery, strength is high, energy is low, but structure is only fair, with two lemons being persistent grain type and size. Bottom line: Moderate in areas with deeper snow pack (ie. > 2 meters). Scary considerable on steep northern aspects with thinner snowpacks. Probably low on south and southwest aspects if you skedaddle before daytime heating.
