The southeasterly winds were drifting some snow, and there were some shallow (1" to 6") wind slabs in isolated areas.  These wind slabs are sitting on small, near surface facets, and crack out easily, but only in small sections.

This is a profile of a pit dug on West Baldy, and typical of where the snowpack is 2 to 2 1/2 feet deep.   Traveling today on upper elevation, northwest through northeasterly facing slopes, the entire snowpack seemed to consist of facets and weakening crusts.  Once this snowpack gets a good load of new snow, we can expect an avalanche cycle on these northely facing slopes.

A look at the snow pack - layers of crusts and facets.  Surface snow is weak, and the small shot of snow forecast for this weekend will probably not bond well to the old snow surface.
