I intentionally triggered an avalanche with a ski cut on a small rollover. This was in the Desolation Lake area, 9,200', W-SW facing slope of 35 degrees.  I had been finding surface hoar in several of my snowpits throughout the day and I figured I could ski cut a slab out on this small slope, which I did.

While standing safely off to the side on a gentle slope, my ski partner jumped on a bit of the hangfire to see if he could get it to go and he was not disappointed.  Again, this is a small little rollover with fairly safe consequences.

Nice, sparkly surface hoar on the bed surface.  In my snowpit tests on the fracture line, it popped out with quite a bit of energy and the Extended Column Test propagated on medium elbow taps.

Interestingly enough, while skiing up in the morning, we noticed this fresh avalanche down near the creek just above where people break a trail in from Reynolds Flat to join the Mill D North trail.  I investigated and found just new snow sliding on the sun crust.  I could not find any surface hoar but I would not doubt that some was involved.  This was on a east-southeast facing slope at 8,000'.

Then, coming back down in the afternoon, there was another natural avalanche just below the one I looked at that morning, and yet another couple on the same slope but just down canyon.  Perhaps the warming by the sun when it poked out briefly was enough to trigger the new snow.  We saw tracks of several skiers who passed by these slabs and then skied slopes on a similar aspect just up the canyon.

More similar slides just down canyon.
