Very weak surface snow can easily entrain more snow than you might expect.
Midpack slab is adding some body to the snowpack, but with very weak snow below, the snowpack structure remains suspect.
The Uinta's are white from far.... but far from white. While you can squeak out a few turns or carefully navigate a ride through an upper elevation rock free meadow, overall the coverage is pretty spotty and quite thin.
Yesterday, we intentionally triggered this sluff which consisted of loose, sugary facets. This is an indicator just how weak the surface snow has grown and a precursor to dangerous avalanche conditions once winter gets going.
You'd really have to go out of your way to trigger an avalanche that breaks into deeper buried weak layers in the snowpack. However, the possibility does exist and a little investigation before getting into steep wind loaded terrain could save you from a nasty ride.
