Red Flag Comments:
We had 5 collapses on various (W-N-E-SE) aspects at mid elevations yesterday, and 6 or 7 today.
Dug our pits on a NE aspect at 9400ft. on SE ridge of No Name Bowl. Slope angle 22-27 degrees.
HS = 120cm. Late January slab thickness varied from 50cm to 80cm, and Pencil hard above the decomposing, and not so dusty slab which was 4 Finger hard here. Below that was the Fist hardness depth hoar where our collapses and tests were failing.
Compression Tests showed moderate to hard results, and Quality 1 shears (Sudden Collapse) on the Fist hardness layer of 2-3mm depth hoar sitting below the 4 Finger hard decomposing slab.
Extended Column Test Propagation: moderate to hard on same layer.
Rutchblock score of 6, with 100% of the block collapsing and disconnecting on same layer.
Got the whole slope to collapse after a bit of time standing and digging around on it. Snowpack is a ticking time bomb, it's proven itself numerous times already to be untrustworthy. As a group in a Level 1 course, we dug our pits to practice the tests and see the dramatic results, but as backcountry travelers we already knew what we needed to know based on the accidents and near misses of late, not to mention our own collapses. Persistent basal weakness=Its not going to heal itself anytime soon.
