Snow Characteristics

Snow Surface Conditions:
Faceted Loose
Melt-Freeze Crust
Snow Characteristic Comments:

Some of the higher avalanche terrain has snow coverage that will support large avalanches if and when we receive a significant snow load. Gold Basin still has 65 cm of snow on the ground...almost no settlement has occurred in over 2 weeks. This will definitely be a contributory factor (15% or less) to the formation of slab avalanche conditions. Over 90% of the snow I travelled through today were facets. Very weak non cohesive snow. The current snow on the ground (where present) will be a weak interface with any new snow amounts.

Primary Concern

Primary Concern:
Wind Slabs
Probability:
Low
Aspect:
North
Northeast
Elevation:
High
Mid
Trend:
More Dangerous
Primary Concern Comments:

Forecasts call for snow on Saturday night. I believe that it will not take a significant new snow loading for a widespread avalanche cycle.

The Utah Avalanche Center in Moab's new snowmobile-A Ski-Doo Skandic! We don't need performance down here, we need a reliable sled to get us in. A 4-stroke work horse will pull field obervers into some of our more isolated terrain such as South Mountain or the northern Massif.
