Rain-Rime Crust
Snow Characteristic Comments:

Adventure skiing has returned to the lower elevations of the Ogden Mountains.  Below Approximately 8,000 feet there is a stout Rain/Melt Freeze crust on all aspects as Doug had mentioned yesterday.  The crust in places is 8inches thick and at about 7,700 feet is around and inch thick, which makes for interesting skiing.  Once the rain crust is isolated, it does slide.  At higher elevation I found a shaded north-northeast aspect to dig a pit hoping that I could effect the weak facets form Oct and Nov.  I was unable to effect the weak layer with and Extended Column Test but was able to pull out the slab by prying (See Video).  Maybe do to the ceanothus that was lingering in the facet layer or because the slab had capped the weak layer in that spot.  One positive thing from today's tour is that skin wax is no longer necessary and the sun was out.

Trend:
Same
Primary Concern Comments:

I was unable to effect the weak layer but I still think that is will catch you off guard.  The avalanches from the recent natural cycle still have not filled in and are a reminder of what could happen.

Here is Video of Extended Column Test on North-Northeast slope Aprox.  8200 feet 35 deg slope angle.  Also skiing below 8000 feet and the rain crust from 1/26/2012 sliding on the older snow.  The total snow depth is 140 cm at about 8200 feet.
