We went for a late afternoon tour up Mt Aire yesterday. Two days of April sun had badly beaten the new snow which had devolved into about 8-10" of mash potatoes. I dug a pit down low on the approach (pic) to about 4.5 feet. And the layers below the new snow felt very solid. The sugar didn't show up until about 4.5' and a buried scrub oak halted my progress. On the summit ridge the crown of the N facing slide was still quite obvious. So we committed to the lookers left lines. We skied from the summit around 5pm and the crust was already forming as the shade came into the face below the cornice. Not much fun really. The bobsled gully out would have been easier if it was icier actually. Pretty sure that was it for the season unless we get a new storm. For this weekend, I would wait until 8-9am to start and aim to be off the summit before noon. Lots of roller balls and rapid heating.
