Snow Characteristics

Snow Characteristic Comments:

About 2" of new snow fell over the course of the day and this helped to freshen up the surface just a bit.  It was light density however and it also helped to trick  you into thinking that maybe you could get an edge into the crust below.  Not quite.  I was still forced to remove my skis and boot it up some steeper sections of the uphill.  More like a toe-pack than a boot-pack.  Off the ridges and onto the leeward side of things it was much more enjoyable with creamy powder turns to be had.  LS slides were the most noticeable hazard encountered today.

Went to check on the status of the rain crust and the Jan 7 SH and NSF.  I also wanted to see if this recent 2" has buried our latest layer of facets that was the old surface.  Sadly, all of the above is still intact.  I am still getting energetic Q1 shears on the Jan 7 SH and am also finding lots of variability in this layer and the crust.  The snow surface before the snow fell today was 2-3mm NSF in much of the sheltered terrain.  With a lack of wind prior to the storm, it is now buried anywhere from 5-8cm below the surface.  One good thing is that the snow on top is pretty light density (about 7-8%) and this may help with layer thinning of this newest funny business.  Depending on how things pan out maybe it wont be a player.  I was however able to get good shears with CT and Tilt Tests.
