Salt Lake Big Cottonwood Canyon Silver Fork Flanigans
Observation Date:
02/03/2011
Location or Route:
Silver Fork East Bowl/ Flanagan's
Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristic Comments:
Variable riding surface from exposed MLK crust on most aspects near ridge top with plenty of stiff but isolated 4F- 1F deposits observed to the N- NE lee of off ridge features. Found great moderate density boot cuff powder in protected N ¼ terrain.
Primary Concern
Primary Concern:
None
Primary Concern Comments:
The past days wind deposits were not reactive to slope cuts but we were able to trigger a few “skier education” pockets in steep sheltered terrain (running within the top 10- 20cm of 18- 25 and 31 Jan storm snow), this having seen some recent diurnal recrystalization.
Secondary Concern
Secondary Concern:
Persistent Slabs
Probability:
Low
Aspect:
North
Northeast
East
Elevation:
High
Trend:
Same
Secondary Concern Comments:
Plenty of spatial variability with the persistent type layers (FC near the MLK crust and 8 Jan SH) The MLK crust has seen significant deterioration (especially up high, where its more exposed) and we didn’t find any significant adjacent weaknesses (FC). The attached profile lacks any hint of the 08 Jan surface hoar but an adjacent profile (100ft higher and slightly left) showed the layer very obvious with 3-6mm upright feathers (buried about a half meter) and mod to hard but highly energetic test results.
