Red Flags

Collapsing
Red Flag Comments:

Rain crust was highly variable, and noticeably breaking under my weight in some places where I traveled, mostly N'ly aspects. Had one collapse that I found to be the surface hoar layer. See pit for more.

Primary Concern Comments:

Buried surface hoar collapsing under additional load of a skier. The crust seems to be holding things together, but still unnerving and enough for me and the dogs to turn tail.

Photo is of large (4-8mm) graupel that came out of the the rain crust like pebbles in conglomerate rock. They were soaked through and refrozen, resembling hail. It is definitely interesting out there. I skiied the past few days and didn't get any collapsing of the surface hoar layer. This where it was assumingly "bridged". But today I was tiptoeing my way up a couloir, and had a collapse right at the sluff cone. This was an area where 50cm of newer snow had accumulated, a heavier load. The crust seems to be holding things together, but more snow means more load, and the layer is still collapsing in isolated areas. The layer did show signs of rounding. Still, a complicated combination of structure and a persistent weak layer are in place.
