Snow Characteristics

Snow Surface Conditions:
Powder
Faceted Loose
Snow Characteristic Comments:

Well developed dime-sized and bigger surface hoar....  Pretty good skiing in sheltered lower angle terrain.  Droppy and Colorado-like on steeper slopes.  12-28 rime-crust very thin in this area and skis would easily  sink through it into large facets and ground at times....

Red Flags

Cracking
Red Flag Comments:

We did not encounter much in the way of red flags.  Cracking in the top 4" isolated and would only propagate a foot or two away from skis....  Old wind slabs only in highest exposed terrain, and we didn't find any slabs thicker than about 6".  The few inches of this year's snow and last year's rime on the surface are not enough to form a significant or reactive slab over the very weak snow underneath, (fist hard 2+mm facets).   The upper layers have seen their share of sublimation and fall apart upon failure in tests, despite the presence of a weak rime-crust from 12/28/2011......  A healthy new crop of sparkly surface hoar decorates the snow surface especially in sheltered open areas and down in the canyon bottoms.

Comments - Photos - Videos (group 1)

We found very shallow snow conditions up in Providence Canyon, with many rocks on the road and shallowly buried down trees and stumps in the trees...  Well less than two feet of weak and sugary snow on most slopes....  The south facing side of the canyon is mostly bare of snow....

A shallow slab on top of very weak, large grained facets or depth hoar.   ECTP 8 Q1 @ 15 cm, but the shallow slab broke apart easily upon failure...
