Snow Characteristic Comments:

This is a snow pit we dug approximately 6' deep just to inspect the current snow pack and identify current layers. We are not totally sure how deep the snow pack is in this location, as we dug 6' then probed our shovels down another 3' and did not hit bottom - we should have gotten our probes out to actually measure the depth but we did not. The details of the slope are as follows: Angle: 32 deg Aspect: NW facing Elev: 8750 ft Temp: Near 32 Time: 4:00 pm We were able to identify a number of wet/rain events within the pack as called out in the accompanying picture. We performed a shovel test and found the weakest layer to be between the new snow and last rain event but required quite a bit of force to get it to fail (heavy direct blows on the shovel). Also cut sides and back with skis and tried a rutschblock block test, found the same weakness but only after 5+ large heavy jumps. Also note worthy of how much the snow pack changed from 9900 ft to 8700 feet as the snow got much heavier and denser with elevation. Conditions seemed to vary greatly with elevation and time. Earlier in the day (6am) we noticed the wind drifts to be very sensitive in this area and very susceptible to cracking but when we returned in the late afternoon this issue was almost totally gone.
