Red Flags

Collapsing
Red Flag Comments:

Group got a large collapse on a SE facing slope at around 10,000' after having been there looking at snow for over an hour.

Primary Concern

Primary Concern:
Persistent Slabs
Probability:
Considerable
Primary Concern Comments:

UAC class was focused on persistent weak layers and dug multiple pits on several aspects. It was hard to get shears with stability tests (ECT) due to the depth of snow above the buried weak layers at this point (1 meter + in most mid and upper elevation shady slopes). However, once you did get failure (sometimes needed a boot drop or two), it propagated with good energy and clean shears. The combination of very poor structure and energy continues to be a major concern, kept to low angle slopes. Stability tests utility is limited.
