Forecast for the Ogden Area Mountains

There is a MODERATE avalanche danger today. Watch for areas where the new snow may be blown into deeper drifts which may be sensitive to the weight of a person. Also keep in mind that there may be weak snow near the ground in the highest northerly facing terrain. Approach that terrain with a lot of caution.

Weather and Snow

Yay!! Looks like the Ogden area faired the best out of the storm that just pushed through. Snow totals are around 6 inches from Snowbasin to Powder Mountain to the Monte Cristo area. Temperatures are mild at most stations with readings in the mid to upper 20s. Southwest winds seem fairly well behaved with only moderate speeds along the higher terrain.

I suspect the new snow will be fairly stable but we have not been out in it yet so you must approach it as guilty until proven innocent. Start with safer terrain which means lower angled slopes with nothing steep above you. Look for any cracking that occurs as you travel. Pay attention to different depths of the new snow. If you're seeing 2" new in some locations and 8" new in others, there's probably been some drifting occurring which is a red flag. Also, there is some weak snow near the ground in the more northerly higher terrain that could act as a weak layer with this new load.

Additional Information

We'll see partly cloudy skies with ridgetop temperatures in the upper 20s to mid 30s and light to moderate speed southwest winds. It looks like another pretty nice day on Tuesday although the southwest winds will be increasing as a closed low pressure system moves inland over California. This system will push a little moisture into Utah and bring some snow to our area Tuesday night into Wednesday. The system looks like it weakens as it continues inland. Snow totals don't look impressive but we should see a decent refresher of perhaps 6 inches or so by the time things move out Thursday.
