What is the difference between the UAC and the FUAC?

The UAC is the cornerstone of a complex Federal/State/County/non-profit partnership. Responsibility for forecasting, education, and awareness is divided as follows:

  • Field observations and reporting
  • Daily reports of conditions and forecasts
  • Warnings and alerts
  • Avalanche awareness talks
  • Public interface
  • Research

  • Non-profit
  • Avalanche education programs
  • Know Before You Go awareness program
  • Fundraising to support the UAC
  • Government relations
  • Support for the observer program
  • Partial financial support of the UAC
  • Website and phone line

The U.S. Forest Service, the State of Utah, and Salt Lake County pay for part of the UAC operations.  The FUAC pays for the rest.

Some of the benefits you have gotten from supporting the FUAC, things that we could not do without your donations:

  • An up-to-date website with avalanche and mountain weather forecasts, photo and video archives, educational modules, accident reports, snow profiles, user input forms, and more
  • Early morning weather and avalanche updates
  • Increased state, county, and city funding from intense lobbying and legislative awareness effort
  • No reduction in forecasters or daily forecasts in tough economic times
  • Free and low-cost education and awareness programs
  • More accurate forecasts due to an improved observer and communication network
  • Some of the most highly qualified, experienced,  and educated forecasters in the world
